Disconnect Policy and Collection Fees
Valley Rural Electric is a cooperative, which means all members are part-owners of the business. Because of this, delinquent bills are an expense for all members.
To encourage members to be responsible and to carry their share of financial responsibility, the board has enacted the following policy:
Members are asked to send in or to drop off their meter readings monthly. This is a primary responsibility of each member, and it helps to control costs. If you do not read your meter, you will be charged $20 if a cooperative employee reads it.
Your bill is payable by the 20th of each month. For example, your September 1 billing may arrive at your home September 3. The amount due is payable until September 20. After that time, a 1.5 percent late fee is added to the balance.
If your bill is unpaid 40 days after the billing date, your service is subject to disconnection. If it is necessary for a cooperative employee to visit your property to collect payment, a $20 collection fee will be added for each trip.
For instance, 40 days after the billing date, if an employee visits your property in an attempt to collect payment, a $20 fee will be added to the amount due whether or not the payment is collected. If a second trip is required to collect the payment, a second charge will be added, for a total of $40 in added collection fees.
By reading your meter and paying your bills on time, you avoid these extra fees and help all cooperative members.
Currently, Valley REC does not offer bill payment via the Internet. However, Valley does offer ElectraPay, an electronic method to pay your electric bill.
With ElectraPay the amount of your electric bill will be deducted automatically
from your checking or savings account on the due date. You will continue to receive
a statement showing your kilowatt-hour use and the amount and date of the next withdrawal from your
account, allowing you to verify your billing before funds are transferred. Please contact the
Billing Department for more information and to enroll in
ElectraPay. You may also e-mail them at
Please include your Valley REC account number, your telephone number, and the name on the account.
